Maths today - Christmas Shopping!!

Today for maths we each 'have' a budget of $200 that we 'have saved' for our Christmas shopping.

We have to buy gifts for the people in our household and can also buy for our friends or other relatives that are special to us.

We will shop online at The Warehouse and from the gifts section of Ezibuy.

As part of our Christmas generosity, we also have to choose to donate a gift to charity - we will use the Tearfund NZ website and select a gift from their catalogue.

Healthy eating group - DRIVE inquiry continues

This week our Eat Right! group from Term One's healthy lifestyle DRIVE inquiry met again with Linda Harris from the Heart Foundation to discuss the items currently available in our 'canteen' - they looked at the supplier's list of healthier alternatives and phoned up to make a request to sample some of the products...

...this will also help with their maths studies as they survey pupils to see what samples they like or don't like and create a report for our office manager about what they suggest should be on offer for lunch orders from our canteen.

Swimming - learning water survival skills

We are very grateful to have grandparent-volunteer Mrs Pollard helping us to learn some important water survival skills - here we are this week practising our deep-water entry, group huddles, survival breastroke/freestyle and surface diving...

...we are very proud of Jacob who scored the most points to win the Best Year Six Boy trophy!

Christmas Dessert for maths!

Today we are pulling together our maths number knowledge and thinking strategies with some planning for cooking a Christmas dessert!

1. With a partner, find and select a recipe for a Christmas dessert - look at how many people the dish will serve and work out how much of each ingredient you will need if you are making enough of the dessert to serve 12 people.

2. After calculating your ingredients, go to Countdown online and find out how much it will cost you to buy the ingredients you need.

DRIVE: Survival of the Fittest #2 DISCOVER

DISCOVER: Survival in Extreme Environments

NZC Levels 3&4: We are learning to:
  • Recognise that there are life processes common to all living things and that these occur in different ways.
  • Begin to group plants, animals and other living things into science-based classifications.

IMPORTANT IDEAS:
  • Living creatures are classified scientifically.
  • MRS GREN is the acronym used for the living processes that all plants and animals need for survival.
  • Each species adapts their own special features for survival in their different habitats.
  • There are many different habitats on Earth and some have quite extreme conditions.
  • Natural habitats can be affected by the actions of people.
