Science - exploring change

Today was the start of our Term Three science-based inquiry: how does it work? Why does that happen?

To get us thinking and asking questions, as well as beginning to practice making predictions and observations, Mrs Coyle carried out a red cabbage juice demonstration:

Red cabbage leaves were ripped up, covered with water, then cooked in the microwave for four minutes. The purple juice was drained into a jar.

To the glasses of tap water Mrs C added: a teaspoon of baking soda, a spoonful of white vinegar and a spoonful of dishwasher powder.
We had to predict what we thought would happen to each glass when the purple juice was added.  We thought of things such as: foaming or fizzing, turning the water purple, the water and juice separating.

We hadn't expected this!
The baking soda glass turned pink, the vinegar glass turned blue, and the dishwasher glass turned green (and faded to yellow over the next five minutes!)

We talked about it all and decided that th chemicals in the water glasses had reacted to the purple juice - because each chemical is different the reactions were different.

Our task tonight is to see if anyone at home can help us understand why the colours went that way...

This week's THINK ABOUT IT quote...

This quote may be 400 years old, but it is still very applicable - Sir Francis Bacon was an English philosopher, scientist and politician...

Inspirational video - something to talk about!

To begin Term Three we are using this TV advert for some discussion about inspiration and goals...
what does it make YOU think about with your own goals?

2015 Passion Project outing - For the Love of Dance

To end their literacy studies for Term 2, Passion Project group "For the Love of Dance" travelled to Gore to meet Rachael Ferguson of Rachael's Studio of Dance, for a dance lesson - check out their cha cha cha in this video!

Big thanks to Vicki Pope and Tania Milne for providing transport and supervision - and a big thanks to Rachel for her time and expertise!

Passion Projects - group visit to Croyden Aircraft Company

In the last week of Term Two our World of Warcraft group travelled to Mandeville to view the Heritage Aircraft Museum and see the restoration workshop of the Croyden Aircraft Company.

This was a great way to finish off their literacy studies about machinery of war; the group were able to sit inside the different de Havilland planes, and see the Tiger Moth and the Italian jet-fighter.

Big thanks to Lawrie for showing the group around, and to Mrs Rhodes and Mrs Sinclair for supervising the group and providing transport!
