Presenting speeches

We have spent the past week writing our speeches, which we will be presenting to the team next week - we are looking forward to reaching this stage so we can share what we have to say!

Now that the speeches are written, we are starting to practise our delivery of the speeches.  Here are a couple of last year's senior speeches - we watched these last week to get ideas on how to structure the message of our speech, and now we can look at them to get some tips on how to do a good job of our presentation...

Super Sentence Winner Week 8-9

Congrats to Kim who was chosen as the winning writer for this piece:
Here I am, excited but scared, ready to drop down.
Then I think "why do this when I could die?" so I climb off my black and white bike and I walk off.

MVP

This week Jake was awarded the Senior MVP (Most Valuable Pupil) Award at Celebration Time:

This what was written in the newsletter:
Jake is a young man who consistently shows a range of our school character and learning values. This makes him a fantastic senior rolemodel of our school.

Jake’s cheerful nature means that he is always positive and enthusiastic about his learning, and he loves to learn new things or try out new activities. He will contribute to class discussions and is a popular group member as others know he will have a lot of ideas and will work to get the job done.

These are wonderful qualities to have, Jake! You are a confident, connected, actively-involved, lifelong learner – keep up the great work!

Congratulations Jake! Well deserved!

Passion Projects - On the Move #3 - more about friction and motion

For Weeks 8 and 9 of the term, here are some digital resources to help us with building our scienctific understandings of forces: friction and motion (movement):

SCIENCE KIDS Forces in Action - friction resistance - Save the Day game

SCIENCE KIDS Forces in Action - friction experiment - Truck Travel game

Teacher Tube video about Newton's Three Laws of Motion - how does force affect movement?

Teacher Tube video about the laws of motion - made by some high school students

GROUP TASKS:
1. See Mrs Coyle about making your own pull-o-meter so you can carry out your own friction and force experiments.
2. Read about this scooter science experiment - what did the group find out about the importance of the rider's weight and body position etc?
3. Think about what you could do to find out if weight is important for speed or how you could streamline a scooter so it goes faster? What experiment could you carry out that will test a question you have about friction or motion? Is there a problem you have and can you think of a solution to try out? We are going to create science fair projects for Term 3!

Senior MVP

Congrats to Harm, who was last week's Celebration Time Senior MVP!
Here is what Mrs C wrote in the newsletter:
Team Kahu’s Year Six pupils experience a wide range of activities throughout the year, and taking part successfully in these activities involves a wide range of values, not least of which is cooperation (paheko).

This young man has been showing his maturity this year, using his cooperative skills to carry out pair or group activities and to organise playground activities with his friends – even to the point of refereeing rugby games!

Harm makes sure that everyone in the group is able to contribute their ideas and he is accepting of those ideas even if they are different to his own. He encourages others to help get the group task done, setting the example by being on-task himself.

You are a wonderful role-model for your peers, Harm! Keep up the great work!
